6.

The helicopter settles in on top of me.

Fortunately, it doesn’t literally sit on top of me. The wheels are keeping the bottom from touching the ground. I don’t have a lot of room here, but it’s enough to move when needed.

I can’t hear a damned thing over the rotor/engine noise. Keeping my head on a swivel, I watch left and right for the first sign of someone stepping out. The engine isn’t winding down, which tells me the pilot (and helicopter) aren’t staying on the ship long. I can use that.

As soon as I see a black-suited pant leg step into view, I shift my weight… and get ready. Michael wasn’t wearing a black suit. This has to be one of the two goons who shot at me. I hold still for another ten seconds until the second guy in a black suit steps out.

Time to go!

I shove off the floor and logroll my body at the two men. Yeah, I don’t weigh that much, but I am really strong. They’re also not expecting it. I crash into their legs, knocking both guys on their asses. One dude flails his arms, letting go of his rifle. The other guy has more combat poise and keeps both hands on his weapon. His tailbone has a nice conversation with the steel floor. Ooh, that hurt.

Neither guy has a ski mask on. They look like generic bad guys from a James Bond movie set somewhere in Europe. Tailbone guy kinda reminds me a bit of Dolph Lundgren, just nowhere near as huge. Don’t recognize their weapons… some kind of small AK-47 type deal, black. Not US-made. Where they came from is not important to me right now. Not being shot is.

I spring to my feet and grab ‘Dolph’ by two handfuls of his suit jacket, smack him hard enough to knock him out, then throw him off to the side. The other guy scrambles to bring his rifle to bear on me… but the weapon’s a little too long to work well in close quarters. I shove it to one side and wallop him in the face with my left hand. Yeah, it’s my weaker arm, but it’s still like getting hit with a baseball bat.

His nose explodes in a shower of blood that dribbles down over his face. While he’s dazed from me breaking his nose, I swipe the automatic weapon and the pistol from his under-arm holster, then shove him aside. He rolls on the deck, holding his face, useless.

I snap my head up and look into the open door of the helicopter right in front of me.

Katherine’s in the back seat next to Michael. Her nice designer clothing is gone, replaced with a basic University of North Carolina T-shirt and a pair of blue gym shorts. She appears to be handcuffed, blindfolded, and has duct tape over her mouth.

Michael’s halfway out of his seat, as if he’d been intending to follow the two thugs but stopped in his tracks when he saw them fall down.
